Preparing Your Furniture For The Project
Put your furniture in a clean place. If you choose a garage as your workplace, clean all dirt and debris beforehand, as they will impact the final result of your woodworking piece.
Use a drop cloth and lay it down to prevent paint from ruining or messing up your floor.
It is highly advised to wear a mask and other safety tools before you start working. You also need to work in an area with a good ventilation system.
Now take a mineral spirit and a lint-free cloth and wet the cloth using mineral spirits. After that, clean your entire furniture using mineral spirits to eliminate any oils or debris on your wooden surface.
Make sure you wipe down the whole area that you will paint.
How To Fix Scratches On Your Wooden Furniture
To fix scratches, take a simple crayon furniture scratch repair kit. You can buy them from a woodworking hardware store or order them online.
Choose the crayon that matches the finish of your wooden surface. You don’t need to worry if you don’t get the one that matches your surface finish. You can always blend the colors to get the perfect combination.
You can start the process by pressing your wax crayon on the scratch. Press the wax crayon and color in any direction to fill the scratch with your wax.
After you are done coloring your scratches. Use the plastic scrapper inside the repair kit to clean up any extra wax you have made around the scratch.
Do this by dragging the plastic scrapper over the scratch to remove excess wax outside or above the scratch. Do this process so you can make your wooden surface to become as smooth as possible.
Use a lint-free cloth to rub the wax on your wooden surface. Make sure you press the wax with enough pressure into the scratch.
The Process Painting Furniture
Now it is time to use the first paint color layer. Take Dixie belle chalk paint (burlap) and shake it for 30 seconds.
Prepare a paper plate and pour the paint onto it. When pouring the paint, pour only a little bit of the amount. You can always pour more paint later.
Use your brush of natural bristle chalk paint to paint your table’s top surface. Brush your surface using motions according to the direction of your wood grain. Make sure you paint the whole piece of the surface.
If the paint looks streaky, don’t panic. It will return to normal after it dries up. Leave the surface to dry for about 1 hour.
After that, you can use a second paint coating using the same technique above.
Allow the second coat to cure for up to 24 hours. The speed of curing time will be affected by humidity and weather. The higher your place’s humidity, the longer it takes for the paint to cure.
You can use sandpaper with 220 levels of grit to lightly sand any areas on your wooden surface where build-up and paint drips occur.
Take another dust cloth that is lint-free to clean up any residues that are left by your sandpaper.
How To Apply Wash Finish For Decorative Effect
Take your second paint color that is Dixie Chalk paint (buttercream), and shake it for 30 seconds.
After that, pour the paint into the container and water on it using a 50: 50 ratio. For example. If you use ¼ cup of paint, add ¼ cup of water. Use a plastic fork to blend the paint with water until they get mixed well.
Begin to paint your top piece using a chip brush with a natural bristle. Paint using the same direction as your surface grain. Make sure you brush using light strokes and long strokes.
Use a bottle of misting spray to mist your paint so the paint can keep moving over your wooden piece as it begins to dry.
You can move the paint using a misting spray bottle as much as possible before applying more buttercream wash. After that, leave it to dry for 30 minutes.
Flip your wooden furniture piece if necessary and use Dixie belle wash to paint the underneath wood. Be sure to paint any visible areas with edges to cover all the wooden areas.
Now, you can paint wash your table’s legs and any table areas you have previously painted using a 50/50 ratio. Ensure you focus on the edges or visible areas to achieve full paint coverage.
Let the paint dry for half an hour before you can touch the surface safely. Let it cure for about 24 hours.
Add Wax Finish As Decorative
Use sandpaper with 220 levels of grit and sand the entire place lightly. Distress the paint on your table’s legs, corners, and edges.
Remove all grimes and dust particles left by the sanding process using a lint-free cloth.
Take a timer and set the time for 15 minutes. Start the timer and begin to apply wax in the next step.
Use a wax brush with natural bristle and Dixie clear wax. Apply your thin coat to your entire table. Dip the brush right into the tin so you can work quickly.
Once the timer is up, start rubbing in your wax. Begin with the area that you apply first, and you can paint the area you did last.
Take a new lint-free cloth to rub your wax on your wooden piece. Make sure you press the wax with enough strength into the wood and rub it in all directions. Leave it to dry for 60 minutes.
If you wish to add more detail and depth, use a new lint-free cloth and dip it into Dixie wax. Afterward, use your finger beneath the cloth to rub the wax into any surfaces you wish to add depth to.
Allow your finished piece of furniture to cure for a day (24 hours).
The total cure time is a month (30 days). However, you can use the furniture gently after leaving it for 48 hours. Make sure you don’t clean it or add anything to your furniture before it reaches 30 days of curing time.
